Westenburg police launch search for hijackers


POLOKWANE – Police in Westenburg launched a manhunt for the men who hijacked a motor vehicle with a 35-year-old woman inside on Friday evening (October 22).

The incident took place along Percy Fyfe Road and police spokesman Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the men raped the woman in Ga-Chuene Leshikishiki, Lebowakgomo police area .

“The woman was reportedly with her cousin on her way to a funeral in Masashane when their motor vehicle started to overheat. The driver then stopped at the Matlala / Mashashane intersection to investigate the problem, ”the statement from Mojapelo said.

He said three men, who were traveling in a red Toyota Tazz, approached and offered to help.

“They managed to start the vehicle before one of the men pointed a gun at the cousin. They got into the vehicle that was started and left with the woman inside, ”Mojapelo added.

His cousin was left at the scene and the other suspects fled in their vehicle.

“One of the men allegedly raped the woman in Ga-Chuene after the hijacked vehicle broke down again along the Bergenek / Thogoaneng dirt road. His accomplices arrived later and also raped the woman. She was found by officials from a vehicle tracking company and taken to hospital. The incident has been reported to the police and a manhunt has already started, ”Mojapelo said.

Provincial Police Commissioner Thembi Hadebe called on residents to help the police locate the suspects and bring them to court.

“Anyone with information is urged to contact Capt Martin Thema on 082 451 7155, Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or the nearest police,” Mojapelo concluded.
