How the business started and thrived in a digital world. Interview with Sam Conan, Founder and CEO


Hello Sam Conan, Welcome to ABOUT INSIDER! When was USA Hair founded?
United States Hair was founded in 2013. It’s crazy to think that we will soon be arriving in a decade here! Time flies, of course.

What do you think is USA Hair’s mission?
To really offer quality Hair extensions at affordable prices. We don’t spend a lot of money on celebrity sponsorships and we don’t mark the price like crazy. USA Hair seeks to pass savings on to customers. Ultimately, it’s a win-win situation for the customer and the business. In return, we’ve built a wonderful community of loyal customers who love to show off their new hairstyles!

Why did you decide to become a business owner?
I always wanted to work for myself. While it may seem scary at first, it is definitely the way to go in the long run! Yes, you work hard, but you work hard for yourself and your family. Not a big company. I feel lucky to have learned so much over the years! Starting an online business is very different from starting a business in your neighborhood. It’s been a big learning curve, but we’re doing really well now. And we can’t wait to see what the next 10 years have to offer.

For someone starting an ecommerce business in 2022, what advice would you give them?
Make sure you have a solid business plan in place! Understand how you are going to evolve, if that’s what you want to do. Seek to take advantage of all the great software that is continually being developed. Examples include:

  • Shopify
  • Cloudflare
  • MailChimp
  • Soft
  • Trello
  • Enthusiasm
  • Zapier

You can go there all day! There is a lot of great software out there that is designed to help small businesses thrive online.

Who was your biggest inspiration?
I wouldn’t say just one person. These really are all the people who have sought to adapt and thrive in different ways as the world has really gone through some tough challenges over the past couple of years.

There are so many articles from creative people who started new businesses and thrived in no time. If you follow a website like TechCrunch, you’ll see this stuff happening all the time! It is truly inspiring to see.

How do you plan to market your products?
Although we still engage in some traditional marketing strategies, our main focus is the digital space. Traffic from search engines and social media has been our bread and butter. We also have an email marketing team as well as a paid media team.

What have you learned since entering the US market?
We are also the founders of Canada Hair. However, entering the US market has certainly had its own challenges. But we tried to do whatever was necessary to get the business up and running. We operate out of Houston, Texas.
