ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) – The FBI on Thursday identified human remains found in a Florida nature reserve as those of Brian Laundrie, a person of interest in the death of his girlfriend Gabby Petito while the couple were traveling to across the country.

The remains, a backpack and a notebook believed to belong to the laundry were discovered Wednesday in a wilderness park in Florida, according to the FBI. The area where they were found was underwater in previous searches.

The FBI office in Denver said in a press release that a comparison of dental records confirmed the remains to be a laundry. A lawyer for his parents, Steve Bertolino, also confirmed in a statement that he was told the remains were those of their son.

“We have no further comments at this time and we ask that you respect the privacy of the laundromat at this time,” the statement said.

The FBI statement did not list a cause of death. It was not known how long the remains could have been submerged in the water.

The discovery of the remains ended a massive search involving federal, state and local law enforcement that began shortly after Laundrie’s disappearance on September 14, two weeks after the 23-year-old returned. alone at his parents’ home in North Port, Florida.

The investigation into Petito’s murder is not yet complete, however. But only Laundrie has ever been identified by law enforcement as a person of interest in the case.

Petito’s family reported his disappearance on September 11. It is a densely forested swampy area that is home to alligators, coyotes, bobcats, snakes, and many other creatures.

The couple first met as teenagers in Long Island, New York, and recently moved to Florida’s Gulf Coast to live with their parents.

They first gained an online audience during their journey in a converted Ford Transit van in videos filled with cheerful scenes that may have hid deeper issues. After Petito’s disappearance, the affair became a real obsession with crime on social media.

The intense attention to Petito’s case has led to new calls for people to pay more attention to cases involving missing Indigenous women and other people of color. Petito, 22, was white.

Her body was found on September 19 on the edge of Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, which the couple had visited. The coroner concluded that she had died of strangulation and that her body had remained where it had been found for three or four weeks.

The couple were arrested on August 12 by police in Moab, Utah, after a physical altercation, but no domestic violence charges have been filed. The police service conducts an internal review to determine if the policy was followed.

Laundrie returned home alone on September 1 in the van the couple took on their trip, which was later impounded by authorities. He was reported missing after telling his parents he was going for a hike in the Carlton Reservation.

Dozens of unconfirmed advice poured in to authorities on the detection of Wyoming’s Laundrie at the Appalachian Trail, but none came to fruition.

The remains were found on Wednesday as searches focused on the nearby Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park, where a Ford Mustang that Laundrie drove in the wild was found. This park is directly adjacent to the Carlton Preserve, both located approximately 35 miles south of Sarasota, Florida.

Laundrie was charged in a Wyoming federal indictment of unauthorized use of a debit card, which alleged that Laundrie had used a Capital One Bank card and someone’s personal identification number to make transactions. unauthorized withdrawals or charges over $ 1,000. It does not say who owned the card or what type of fees were charged.

If Laundrie had lived, this indictment would have enabled authorities to arrest him.
