Monastery barracks and Catacombs of the monastery are two key places during your first hours in Diablo 2.

While you’re still learning the ropes of battling the hordes of Hell, the final two quests of Act 1 will require you to find unknown places on your travels.

Tools of the Trade will take you to the Monastery Barracks, while Sisters to the Slaughter takes place in the Monastery Catacombs. These can be hard to find, especially if it’s your first time with the game.

This page explains the Location of the monastery barracks and Location of the monastery catacombs in Diablo 2 so you can complete Act I in the blink of an eye.

How to start Tools of the Trade and Sisters to the Slaughter in Diablo 2

In Diablo 2, Act I primarily serves as an introduction to both the story and some of the key characters you’ll meet along the way. While not all of the quests are necessary to complete Act II, chances are you’ll do all six of them organically. This includes Search for Cain, which tasks you with finding the Underpass, among others.

The fifth and sixth quests, called Tools of the Trade and Sisters to the Slaughter respectively, take place in the same location. But even if it sounds simple enough, getting to the monastery can be difficult.

The tools of the trade are granted by the blacksmith Charsi after completing the quest The Forgotten Tower. Alternatively, you must be at least level eight and Deckard Cain should be back in camp already.

As for Sisters to the Slaughter, Deckard Cain will assign the quest after Tools of the Trade. Be sure to talk to him when you get back to camp to activate him.

As we mentioned, both of these quests take place in the Monastery. To get to it, however, you’ll have to go through a series of areas, most of which don’t have their own waypoints.

Unfortunately, the map layouts in Diablo 2 are randomly generated, which is why we cannot show you the exact location. But don’t worry – the following sections will explain the usual paths regardless of the variations in each independent area.

Explanation of the location of the Diablo 2 Monastery barracks

Let’s start with the tools of the trade. The Monastery Barracks are easier to find than the Catacombs, but in comparison, the location doesn’t have its own waypoint.

Admittedly, it won’t take long for you to find it as you explore Act I. You need to at least cross the Cold Plains, Stony Field, and Dark Wood, so don’t worry about missing it before that.

Once you come across the Black Marsh, look for a route to the Tamoe Plateau.

From there, the golden rule is to stay on the road. Feel free to take as many detours as you want, especially if you want to level up (there is a dungeon called The Pit in this area which is perfect for this).

But if possible, following the road will lead you to the monastery gate.

The enemies will be stronger here, so take your time and use the potions wisely. At one point you will find an exit to the outside and an area called The Outer Cloister.

There isn’t much going on in this area, but it has its own waypoint. Make sure to activate it to be added to the roster, and take a break to return to Rogue Encampment in case you need to restock so you don’t waste a Town Scroll.

The monastery barracks are located after the outer cloister. It is a large area that has no subsequent levels. It is important to note this since you will find the way to the prison here.

It’s not necessary for this quest, so be sure to explore every nook and cranny until you find The Smith in The Barracks instead.

In our experience, the boss was in an uncharted corner of the map, which is why we recommend that you explore it completely until you eventually find it.

After the fight, interact with the forge to collect the Malus Horadric. This is the tool Charsi needed, so bring it back to the camp and the quest will be complete. She will then give you the chance to imbue a piece of equipment.

Explanation of the location of the Diablo 2 Monastery barracks

Once you’re done with Tools of the Trade, we recommend opening a city portal using a scroll to make it easier to get back here. But if anything, you can always use the waypoint to the outer cloister and go through the barracks again.

While at camp, talk to Deckard Cain to start the Sisters to the Slaughter mission. Then we return to The Barracks and enter the jail.

The first thing you’re going to do in Level 1 Prison is find its waypoint, just in case you need to get to town and don’t have a town scroll to use.

From there, all you have to do is fight off the hordes of enemies until you eventually come out to The Inner Cloister.

This is a small area that mainly serves as an intermediate point. As such, activate the waypoint before you leave just in case you need to make it to camp, as the next waypoint is a bit far.

Exiting the interior cloister will lead you to the cathedral. Prepare to repel some forces of hell here and prepare to descend. The monastery catacombs are located after the cathedral.

It’s a big dungeon, so take your time to explore it. The Catacombs have a total of four levels to go through, and luckily there is a waypoint on the second level.

Make sure to activate the waypoint as the final boss from Act 1 awaits you in the next level – restocking and clearing your inventory is a must.

Upon arrival at level 4 of the Catacombs, the Sisters to the Slaughter quest will be updated with the objective of killing Andariel – that’s it.

It’s a tough fight, which is why it’s crucial to have the waypoint activated to the next level as Plan B if things go wrong.

After you achieve the victory, make sure to collect all the relevant loot and return to the Rogue Encampment to continue exploring or take action 2. Welcome to Diablo!
